Sky Pilot (Polemonium eximium) survives and thrives at the highest elevation of any plant in the Sierra Nevada. The descent down to the South Face is full of them, some deep blue like these and others more pale blue.
One time on Mount Lyell we kept seeing butterflies as we hiked over the snowfields. After over a mile of nothing be snow, we arrived on the summit ridge to find it teeming with Sky Pilots being polinated by thousands of butterflies. And there to take advantage of it were dozens of birds chowing down on butterflies and then pooping and fertilizing the Sky Pilots. The circle of life, but seemingly the butterflies got the short end of it.
